Modern Takes on Seating

Designers are offering two new takes on classic seating design, while one is offering lounging options set firmly in the present:

Lily Chair

On the 50th anniversary of the design, Fritz Hansen has introduced the Lily chair in sculptural walnut veneer with classic chromed legs. Natural Walnut makes this special anniversary edition both unique and historical. Until now, the Lily chair has never been released with a natural veneer exterior because it is extremely difficult to make the curved armrests without cracking the exterior veneer.

“The Lily was Arne Jacobsen’s last chair design and perhaps his most elaborate,” said Christian Andresen, head of design, Fritz Hansen. “It resembles a lily flower with open petals. Jacobsen’s lifelong interest in botany and painting can be seen very clearly in this design.”

The armrest angles and wood grain are complex compliments. When executed perfectly, they converge beautifully. The Lily 50th Anniversary Edition is available with or without armrests in natural Walnut veneer with chromed legs. The interior veneer layers are beech wood. Every chair has a special anniversary tag mounted under its seat.

Wishbone Chair

In celebration of the CH24 Wishbone Chair’s eye-catching form, Carl Hansen & Søn has released the icon in limited edition matte finishes, called Soft Colors.

“Every year we celebrate Hans J. Wegner’s birthday by introducing a new version of the Wishbone Chair, changing its appearance without interfering with its integrity as a design,” said Knud Erik Hansen, managing director, Carl Hansen & Søn. “This year’s glossy navy blue edition is charming and discrete, while highlighting the simple beauty that has made the Wishbone a favorite for seventy years.”

A portion of proceeds from all sales of the limited-edition chairs will benefit Be Original Americas’ Student Fellowship Program. As a long-standing member of Be Original Americas—the nonprofit organization committed to informing, educating and influencing manufacturers, design professionals and consumers on the economic, ethical and environmental value of authentic design—Carl Hansen & Søn is committed to educating members of the design community and consumers on the origin and importance of purchasing authentic design.

20Twenty Collection

20Twenty is a new collection from Brown Jordan created with longtime collaborator designer Richard Frinier.

The 20Twenty collection conveys a unique view of creativity, relaxation and balance for a new decade with 20/20 vision. Understated soft angles in the lounge seating surfaces and cylindrical tapered legs come together to create a welcoming and open style. Thoughtfully enhanced with a layering of hand-woven synthetic fiber, wood and ceramic tabletop materials, and textural fabrics in a balanced color palette inspired by nature, the collection provides a sense of positivity and well-being.

“I visualized our new 20Twenty modular collection with a deep understanding and appreciation of how people like to design their indoor/outdoor spaces with the ability to change things up in form, material and color to imagine their own personal experience,” says Frinier. “20Twenty helps to create a calm and relaxing experience.”

Lounge components have optional integrated end tables and can be smartly configured for larger or smaller spaces and are easily mixed and matched with ottomans, ottoman tables and bunching tables in three different sizes and heights. Modular units may float independently of one another or be joined together with a clip-on connector for ease in planning and enjoying more conversational gatherings for entertaining.
