Modern history

The new, beautifully designed European-inspired AC Hotel Washington DC Capitol Hill Navy Yard is now open and welcoming guests. Eleven stories of 225 guestrooms are capped with one of the city’s most exciting new rooftop restaurants and bars—Smoke & Mirrors.

“The angular pathways and streets connecting Capitol Hill’s iconic monuments inspired design features throughout the hotel, such as the illuminated ceiling sculptures, deep recessed features and most notably, the control of perspectives,” said Staci Patton, hospitality leader/principal, DLR Group. “Intimate seating areas are situated among the high-contrast design elements, while views through the large windows of the city streets outside connect those passing by with the life within the lobby and AC Lounge. Playing off hierarchy and symmetry, a series of connected architectural rooms lead guests through a transformative experience as they move from one space to another. Each space acts as a continuation of the last but applies its own artistic signature set against a cohesive palette. Columns clad in a dark, lustrous material and sharp angular lines of ceiling feature contrast against light, polished floors, natural rough limestone accents and soft drapery.”

Guests can expect timeless amenities set amongst spacious king and double queen configurations, many with private balconies and cityscape views. More than 3,000 sq. ft. of meeting space is welcoming groups and special events with ample space for coworking, intimate weddings and professional gatherings. A 24-hour, 10,000-sq.-ft. fitness center is appointed with tech-forward equipment and modern touches. And those familiar with the AC experience will adore the updated lobby level AC Lounge with breakfast and all-day dining options, retractable windows and indoor/outdoor dining spaces.

“Positioned amongst one of the most influential cities where tradition meets new youthful perspective, a valued tension between the old and new emerges in the design of the new AC Hotel in Washington DC Capitol Hill,” Patton said.

In the evening, a private elevator shuttles guests to Smoke & Mirrors, a chic, alluring cocktail lounge and panoramic all-weather patio overlooking the Capitol and downtown.

“Time and again we find ourselves in search of balance, seeking to respect our history while reflecting on our growth and opportunity for improvement,” Patton said. “The design balances modernism and nods to the rich history of its namesake location, Capitol Hill. Inspired by the rich history of Washington, DC, the space evokes a contemporary relevance that embraces the past while also incorporating the modernism that is indicative of the AC Hotel Brand.”
