What is a thread count?
Thread count is defined as the number threads per square inch of fabric. It’s the sum of the vertical threads (called the warp threads) and the horizontal threads (called the weft threads). For example, if there are 150 threads woven horizontally and 150 threads woven vertically per square inch, the thread count is 300.
Is a higher thread count better?
A common misconception in the sheets industry is that a higher thread count is always better. While that’s true in some instances, it isn’t a hard and fast rule that you should make all of your purchasing decisions by.
Generally, increasing thread count increases the softness and durability of sheets. However, a higher thread count also means a tighter weave, which isn’t always desirable. For example, higher thread count sheets won’t be as breathable or offer as many cooling benefits as lower thread count sheets.
Higher thread counts can be misleading
It’s also worth mentioning that due to manufacturing limitations, it’s difficult to fit more than 400 threads per square inch. So why do you see 1,000- or 1,600-thread-count linens when you shop?
Some companies inflate their thread count numbers by using multi-ply yarn or other creative math. Instead of counting the threads, these companies count the strands that make up the yarn. It’s a marketing tactic designed to trick consumers into thinking their products are of higher quality and therefore worth higher prices.
For example, 1,600-thread-count sheets could be made with lower-quality, four-ply yarn, while 400-thread-count sheets are made with superior single-ply yarn. Just by looking at the advertised thread count, you might think the 1,600-thread count is better, but that doesn’t tell you the whole picture.
What is a good thread count?
Now that you understand more about thread count, you’re probably wondering what thread count to look for. Good Housekeeping found that the top-rated bed sheets tend to have thread counts between 300 and 500. However, that doesn’t mean every bed sheet with a thread count in that range is high-quality. Instead, you must consider more than just thread count when purchasing hotel linens. Look at the fibers used, the ply,and the weave. For towels, keep GSM in mind, too. That tells you more about a towel quality than thread count does. Many hotel guests appreciate fluffy, thick towels in the 600 to 900 GSM range.
