Warm & whimsical

Staypineapple Boston has unveiled a new design renovation. The overall guiding theme of the property’s refresh is “whimsical elegance.” Completed by Cicero Construction Group, the renovations include stunning elements such as marble floors, custom mosaics, splashes of color and more, while keeping the sense of fun that the Staypineapple brand is known for.

“We work to incorporate our hotels into the local vernacular of the surrounding neighborhood as well as the history of the building,” said Dina Belon, VP, operations and real estate assets, Pineapple Hospitality Company. “Particularly for boutique hotels, what guests are looking for is an authentic experience in the city they are visiting. We look to create a sense of place within the larger context of the neighborhood so that the hotel also has its own character. We add some of the special ‘Pineapple’ magic that speaks the language of our brand. Our brand design concept is whimsical elegance, so that is always part of the mix at every hotel.”

Some key features of the design include classic and elegant Bianco Carrara and Nero Marquina marble floor tile and custom mosaics, all imported from Italy. The property’s mosaic work (seen on the flooring, stairs and bar face) was all done by Sicis. The mosaic at the entrance of the property’s Trophy Room has a whimsical touch with the brand’s distinctive pineapple inserted into the classically round medallion.

“We are located in the historic South End/Back Bay communities, which has one of the largest collections of Victorian and Edwardian architecture, however, the building which was built in 1910, has none of the telltale signs of that architectural style,” Belon noted. “It is streamlined classical with its brick facade, popped openings and streamlined shape. The windows and trim work to really create the architectural interest. We used those elements as a jumping-off point to create a sense of place by painting the exterior bi-fold doors green to draw a contrast with the large windows providing a view of the interior where the pop and color reside.”

The property’s highly contrasting design of black, gray and white is offset with the apple green pops of color, a nod to the brand’s playful spirit. The unique apple green fireplace holds the attention in a small lobby seating area with amazing hand-cut mosaic art. The artist, Asya Kozina, is a paper sculpture from Russia, and the mosaic was painstakingly crafted by artisans in Italy. Images on the property’s roller shades also match the fireplace mosaic and were completed by the same artist.

From the lobby, mosaic stair risers invite guests upstairs with a smile. The design was a single piece that was cut on-site and installed on each riser to create a visual puzzle that together forms the Staypineapple logo. Guests can also enjoy a view of the original steel staircase installed during the building’s construction in 1910 with its pixelated colorful carpet. It embodies the mash-up of historical elegance and whimsical design that is seen throughout the property.

In addition to these design elements specific to the property, Staypineapple Boston also features details aligned with the overall brand’s guest-centric design. The design touches to the guestrooms also include brand pillars. Rooms are designed with guests in mind, with design elements aimed at making the stay more convenient, including space for luggage available under the bed, built-in drawers and more.

“The guestrooms have been designed for the boutique nature of the space, utilizing every inch of space,” Belon said. “The closet is a flat panel on the wall with innovative three-prong swinging hooks to provide adequate storage space in a minuscule 6″ of depth. Additionally, a pop-up table is incorporated into the panel to provide a convenient desk and dining top. When done you just fold it down. Two upholstered ottomans are placed under each floating nightstand as extra seating for the table or just putting your shoes on.”
