The power of possibility

There’s power in possibility. That’s for sure. And if you don’t take my word for it, take theirs. The central theme of this year’s RTRX last month in Columbus, OH—an annual event that inspires ideas, nurtures thinking and encourages action—delivered on the power and purpose of possibility and its transformative nature.

Possibility is the path forward. That theme found its way into the discussion among industry leaders who gathered for our Hotel Business executive roundtable, sponsored and hosted by Rockbridge. It’s the cover story of this issue. Whether discussing personnel or projects, possibility was at the core of the engaging conversation. More specifically, how possibility turns into progress. After all, who better to discuss how possibility and optimism are intrinsically tied together than optimistic hoteliers who are passionate about their people and their profession?

One of the facts that always emerges from these discussions is: The hospitality industry is about people. And that the human element will always lie at the very heart of every hotel experience. I’m never surprised to hear about members of the hotel community who go above and beyond the scope of their job to help the community at large. We hear these stories all the time but often don’t share them. Unsung heroes. Untold stories. So, I’m taking a moment to do that now.

As you read the feature, starting on page 16, you’ll see a reference to the Hi-Impact Heisman Award. The award was introduced to spotlight such heroes of hospitality for their outstanding contributions and unwavering dedications to their team, customers and community—individuals, from housekeeping supervisors to night auditors to GMs, who consistently go the extra mile in service and generosity.

This year at RTRX, four finalists were recognized, with Debra George from The Wynfrey Hotel Hyatt Regency Birmingham chosen as the winner. Debra began her journey at the property  in 2004; here’s more about what led her to being this year’s recipient, as shared by Sarah Rose, director at Rockbridge.

Debra exemplifies the spirit of hospitality, resilience and excellence. For more than two decades, she has welcomed guests with warmth and grace, even in the face of profound personal adversity. Her story is one of quiet heroism, unwavering dedication and a deep commitment to service. Debra is often the first face our guests see, and her presence sets the tone for their entire experience. Her genuine smile and warm greetings have led many to describe her as “the soul of the restaurant.”

Shortly after joining the team, Debra was widowed and became the sole caregiver to her three-year-old twin boys. Despite this life-altering loss, she continued to show up for guests and her grace never wavered. To the guests, she remained a beacon of hospitality. Years later, Debra’s niece passed away, leaving behind three toddlers. Without hesitation, Debra took custody of the children, becoming a mother of five—all under the age of five. Her strength and selflessness during this time were nothing short of extraordinary.

In December 2023, Debra was involved in a serious car accident on her way to a 5 a.m. shift. She spent several weeks in the ICU and was out of work for three months. When she returned, the physical toll was visible—but her spirit remained unshaken. She resumed her role with the same warmth and positivity that have defined her career. Her colleagues and guests alike describe her as a source of inspiration. She lives and breathes a culture of excellence, and her impact is felt by everyone she encounters.

According to Sarah, “It’s always a powerful reminder of why we do what we do, and how lucky we are to be a part of something so special.” I agree.

Debra’s story is inspiring, as her legacy is not just in the awards she’s won (she’s won many), but in the countless lives she’s touched with her kindness. I truly love sharing stories like this. It speaks to the very essence of what defines our industry which, when you come down to it, is what defines us.
