Pier Sixty-Six Resort reborn

Pier Sixty-Six Resort, the centerpiece of a $1-billion redevelopment project by Tavistock Development Company, is a renowned landmark that will reinforce its identity as one of the most esteemed resorts in Florida. Following a property-wide transformation, the iconic establishment has embarked on a new chapter and is set to be reborn in the Fall of 2024, further cementing its footprint as one of South Florida’s premier destinations.

Celebrated as one of the most striking facades and deemed a legacy in the Fort Lauderdale skyline, the 32-acre waterfront resort complex along the Intracoastal Waterway is being meticulously recreated to come back to life as a cornerstone gateway to the “Yachting Capital of the World.” Beyond restoring the iconic spire-topped tower to its former glory with a quintessential reputation as an upscale getaway, Pier Sixty-Six is reinventing an all-encompassing experience in South Florida and creating a seamless connection between land and sea, marina and resort. Upon opening, the development will become the social harbor of Fort Lauderdale with a world-class marina, luxury resort, coveted food and beverage experiences, a marina promenade with waterfront shops and alfresco dining and the property’s first residential offerings.

“For more than 50 years, Pier Sixty-Six has captured the hearts and imaginations of guests from around the world. Now, the resort has embarked on its next chapter—one that is preserving its storied past and equally creating new memories for generations to come,” said Craig Collin, president/COO, Tavistock Development Company. “We have a steadfast commitment to strengthen the integrity and keep the nostalgia of the property alive, while seamlessly blending in purposeful design and welcoming the future.

History

The historic site began as a fuel dock for Phillips 66 Petroleum in the 1950s along the famed Intracoastal Waterway, where eventually a world-class marina was created in the yachting capital of the world. In the 1960s, the Pier Sixty-Six hotel and iconic spire-tower was built, forever changing Fort Lauderdale’s skyline. The property and its exceptional waterfront location has drawn celebrities, civic leaders, Fort Lauderdale society and visitors from around the world.

Design and architecture

Led by world-class architects including HKS Architects, NELSON Worldwide and Garcia Stromberg, Pier Sixty-Six is ensuring the historic integrity of the original building constructed in the late 1960s by reinvigorating an iconic facade that bears a slight resemblance to architecture from The Space Age and blends into the elements of a present-day subtropical location.

Each of Pier Sixty-Six’s new waterfront structures will exude a thriving coastal personality, equipped with spacious cantilevered balconies and exteriors that resemble the shapes of unique coastal elements such as coral and wind-swept sand dunes. The legendary spire tower will be fully restored to preserve its bold and angular shape inspired by the Googie architecture trend of the 1940s, as well as its noticeable crown of trihedrons, which pays homage to the design of Phillips 66 Petroleum and gas stations’ V-shaped canopies from the 1950s. The property’s sophisticated South Florida character will weave throughout the interiors, celebrating its notable mid-century modern architecture with elegant and contemporary designs, an airy ambiance, a neutral color palette and floor-to-ceiling windows allowing the waterfront and palm trees outside to serve as a vibrant focal point. The resort’s common areas will feature View Smart Windows, where guests and visitors alike will notice the use of artificial intelligence to automatically adjust and tint in response to outdoor conditions resulting in guests staying cool and comfortable without the need for blinds.

Accommodations, amenities & spa

Each of the 325 rooms and suites at the resort will boast a timeless design with modern luxury touches. With the introduction of a 15,000-sq.-ft. spa, Technogym-powered Fitness Center, dynamic multi-level pool, more than 40,000 sq. ft. of entertainment and meeting space, a marina promenade and one of the largest superyacht marinas on the eastern seaboard, the completion of the development’s transformation will emphasize Pier Sixty-Six as a premier vacation destination. With its unique vantage point, guests of the resort will notice that the waterways become their personal playground with a range of elegant aquatic activities.

Culinary

Reflective of its marine lifestyle, Pier Sixty-Six will introduce 12 culinary venues inclusive of signature restaurants along the waterfront promenade with creations inspired by the coastal city and its finest seasonal ingredients. Each menu will be crafted by culinary experts, who transform guests’ preferences into bespoke gastronomic experiences that pair flawlessly with world-class wines and cocktails from the greatest mixology minds in South Florida. Most notably will be the restoration of the iconic rotating Pier Top lounge, admired for decades for being the only 17th-floor observation deck showing 360-degree panoramic views of the Atlantic Ocean, Intracoastal Waterway and Downtown Fort Lauderdale. The glamorous social bar and lounge will come to life with bird’s eye sights while guests are enjoying expertly crafted cocktails in an energetic and lively setting.

Meetings & events

The resort’s new indoor and outdoor venue selections feature more than 40,000 square feet, combining exceptional service with superb catering and breathtaking surroundings. Pier Sixty-Six Resort has long distinguished itself as a premier Fort Lauderdale location to celebrate by the sea and with its debut in 2024, the resort will be among the largest resort event spaces in Fort Lauderdale and one of the few resort destinations in Broward County with such a vast array of meeting and event space.

Pier Sixty-Six Residences

In addition to the new resort, the multi-faceted destination also includes the property’s first residential offerings. The Residences at Pier Sixty-Six features an exclusive collection of 91 private residences across two, 11-story condominium buildings and two, four-story resort residence buildings. The first Residences at Pier Sixty-Six are projected to be completed in 2024, coinciding with the debut of the reimagined Pier Sixty-Six Resort.

Pier Sixty-Six Marina

Pier Sixty-Six is a legendary world-class marina, with 164 deepwater slips for yachts up to 400 ft. This is Fort Lauderdale’s best access to the ocean, with 5,000 linear feet of dockage and plenty of enticing ways to lure boaters ashore for delightful experiences, socializing and utter relaxation. The Marina remains open throughout construction and continues to be a host site for the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show and home of the Superyacht Village.
