The Peninsula Hotels is celebrating its brand with art installations across the country. These artists not only showcase their unique talents, but give guests and employees a reason to always stay inspired.
“As a global luxury brand with a 90-plus-year legacy, The Peninsula Hotels understands the important place that art holds for society—it is a universal language that crosses borders and builds human connections through a vocabulary of shared emotions,” said Carson Glover, VP, brand marketing & communications, The Peninsula Hotels. “Art is increasingly important in modern lives, which is driving a strong consumer desire for cultural tourism. ‘Art in Resonance,” our global contemporary art initiative, which features exclusive and original commissions by emerging and mid-career artists, provides inspiring, thought-provoking, new art experiences for our guests and our communities alike while creating opportunities to engage with The Peninsula brand through experiential art installations. Through these art installations, we hope to redefine the hospitality experience and create lasting memories for our guests that will touch and inspire them for a lifetime.”
Peninsula New York
- “Life en Route” Art Installation
In keeping with its tradition of presenting art of the highest quality, The Peninsula New York has curated a selection of artworks that center upon the idea of a life en route. Conjuring a feeling of wanderlust and capturing cross-cultural impressions, this varied presentation brings together a renowned group of international artists working across media from photography to silkscreens to textiles. At turns humorous, wistful, romantic, meditative and exhilarating, this assemblage of decade-spanning artworks evokes a sentiment particular to travel that often cannot be put into words. Some of the works on view will be available for sale to benefit some of The Peninsula New York’s cultural partners.
- Artist in Residence—Peter Riezebos
In addition to the “Life en Route” installation, Dutch neo-expressionist painter, Peter Riezebos, is creating four pieces of artwork for the property as part of the group’s global Art in Resonance program. These pieces will be hung in different suites and guestrooms, such as the 2,530 sq. ft. Fifth Ave. Suite overlooking Fifth Ave., along with a piece for Salon de Ning, a permanent fixture for all visitors to experience. Each piece will be different and will celebrate life and NYC. Additionally, one of the suites will turn into Riezebos’ “artist studio” where he will create his masterpieces.
- Featured Artist—Steve Zolin
Zolin’s new series “City Rhythms” is now on display in Peninsula New York’s Gotham Lounge. His seven pieces gesture a celebration of the return of New York and the hotel. Many of the pieces take the viewer’s gaze through the movement and rhythm of the cityscapes, including the Bowery, Wall St. and even the artist’s own POV from the window of his Upper West Side residence. The singular interior artwork depicts the Peninsula’s iconic lobby and the magnificent chandelier.
Peninsula Chicago
- with all, and still… Art Installation
The Peninsula Chicago has unveiled its latest ‘Art in Resonance’ installation and partnership with Chicago artist, Bob Faust. The installation is a series of layered, billboard-scaled works created from photographic details captured by Faust from several of Chicago’s 77 neighborhoods. The vibrant, digital images are used as the main medium to create new artworks that look different when seen from different vantage points. From a distance, formal patterns and vibrant colors draw the viewer in, but upon close inspection the actual subject of the photos becomes clear. Larger than legible, hand-embellished letterforms pulled from the exhibition title act as Flash paint connectors, linking each of the seven works to one another and adding context to the entirety of the installation. The result is a colorful and immersive experience that feels as if the vernacular panels of distant canvas billboards have been transformed and transported to The Peninsula Chicago’s lobby, providing an urban and industrial counterpoint to the elegance of the surrounding hotel spaces.
Peninsula Beverly Hills
- Artist in Residence—Ashley Longshore (pictured above)
As part of its 30th Anniversary, Peninsula Beverly Hills recently announced a first-of-its-kind partnership with mixed-media artist and entrepreneur, Ashley Longshore. Known for energetic, brash and colorful work that takes on pop culture and feminism, Longshore will be producing over 20 original pieces out of the hotel–where she’ll move throughout the property and several suites for different perspectives through her tenure. The partnership will also include a special over-the-top tea service—a vibrant and playful take on the hotel’s famous afternoon tea service—along with meet and greet opportunities, an “In Bed with Ashley Longshore” package, and will culminate with an art show showcasing the pieces she created while on property.
Available Oct. 1—Nov. 30, the “In Bed with Ashley” package comes complete with a handwritten note from the artist, a hand-painted bottle of Laurent-Perrier champagne, a limited-edition Ashley Longshore gift, daily breakfast and more.
Longshore’s residency at the Peninsula Beverly Hills will culminate in an art show featuring the variety of pieces she created while staying at the property. On the docket: an Ashley Longshore x Peninsula Beverly Hills acrylic tray, embroidered linen confectionary cocktail napkins (set of six), and assortments of small, mixed-media artworks. Known and revered for being at the forefront of luxury and culture, The Peninsula’s partnership with Longshore serves as a love letter to the spirit of the brand.
In August, guests had the opportunity to enjoy an over-the-top tea service, inspired by the hotel’s iconic, traditional tea service, laced with Longshore’s signature pop-culture inspired flair, from hand-painted Champagne bottles and sneak peeks of art from her forthcoming book on the menus, to cheeky placemats and napkins featuring some of her signature phrases, a beautiful array of petit fours hand painted with her artwork, meet-and-greet and book signing opportunities and more.
“The Peninsula Hotels maintains an ongoing commitment to supporting the contemporary arts,” Glover said. “Through a myriad of initiatives and partnerships, we enable access to artworks—by both esteemed and emerging artists—at each of our U.S. properties. From special live painting events and immersive exhibitions to art shows and carefully-curated afternoon teas, we are incredibly proud to provide a platform and space for our creative partners to share their work, while engaging directly with our guests and local communities.”
