Maya Romanoff, David Rockwell collab

Maya Romanoff, a manufacturer of handcrafted wallcoverings in the U.S., has released a fifth collaboration with award-winning architect and designer David Rockwell (FAIA). The collection, called PortoTM, is a responsibly harvested, colored and hand-inlaid cork on a luminous metallic foil.

Why Cork? Cork is a sustainable, rapidly-renewable resource. Each time cork is harvested, the cork bark regenerates itself (and in doing so absorbs CO2).

The Porto Cork Collection is offered in three designs: Deco, reminiscent of the theatrical draping of fabric; Elo, inspired by the intricacy of chain link; and Lino, a series of variegated yet rhythmic lines. The designs feature organic arrangements of vibrant and subdued colors with luminous metallic foil to emulate subtle movement and light play. Available in 27 colorways, such as Nebbiolo Natural, Syrah Slate and Green Grenache.

Porto is the latest example of Maya Romanoff’s commitment to creative collaborations and unique designs, as well as its rigorous standard for quality, beauty and innovation.

“We were inspired by the natural beauty of cork when creating Porto. With a multitude of color combinations and luminous metallic lines to define the patterns, this new collection has elevated cork as an aesthetic with three thoughtful designs that can create an extraordinary environment,” said Joyce Romanoff, CEO, Maya Romanoff

“Our collaboration with Maya Romanoff over many years has allowed us to think outside of the box when it comes to materiality and design. We were thrilled when they suggested we explore the potential of cork, because it’s become our recent obsession in the studio, too. Porto highlights cork’s incredible range of aesthetic properties and applicability for interiors,” said David Rockwell, FAIA, founder/president, Rockwell Group.

The Porto collection exemplifies that Maya Romanoff’s inspiration for products comes from nature and the materials themselves. From early on, its founder, Maya, instilled in every member a deep respect for material balanced with a lawless sense of play. This philosophy is firmly planted in this new collaboration that pairs the natural aesthetic of cork and opulent color combinations with durability, functionality and perfectly scaled designs for hospitality and residential. The collection is ideal for environments that require beauty and resilience, as it can be easily cleaned with a diluted bleach solution or disinfecting wipes.

Founder Maya’s long-standing commitment to Eastern philosophy has greatly influenced the company’s respect for the environment and materials. Maya Romanoff has significant control over the treatment of materials as well as of means of production. The Porto collection is responsibly manufactured with rapidly renewable, sustainably harvested cork and water-based inks. Maya Romanoff is committed to partnering with factories that treat its employees fairly and provide a safe, rewarding work environment.
