Kelly Wearstler unveils The Quill Room

Austin Proper Hotel, Proper Hospitality’s Texas outpost, has launched designer Kelly Wearstler’s latest hospitality project—an intimate cocktail lounge and salon—The Quill Room.

Joining signature Mediterranean-inspired restaurant The Peacock, private ground-floor cocktail bar Goldie’s and Mexican-inspired rooftop restaurant and bar La Piscina, the latest outlet completes the property’s offering of distinct dining concepts helmed by the award-winning Austin-based MML Hospitality.

Located on the second floor of the property and prioritized for hotel guests and residents, The Quill Room offers a combination of Old-World opulence and modern elegance, with a French-inspired menu and regular live music programming for those with a thirst for entertainment and a desire for intimate conversation. From signature cocktails, classic martinis and decadent bites, the curated menu and thoughtfully designed space offer the perfect blend of romanticism and wonder, transporting guests to another time and space within the bustling energy of Downtown Austin.

Anchored by a textural wood and metal-clad bar that showcases a hint of neon crafted by a local Austin artist, the space offers immediate warmth to guests upon entry. The golden wall covering that wraps around the space was adapted from a piece in the Kelly Wearstler archive that was originally created during the UK’s 1920s Arts & Crafts Movement. Throughout, it explores the natural motifs consistent with the period and sets the stage for a layered palette of warm terracotta textiles and stone, rich sable leathers and midnight tones.

Inspired furnishings represent a range of design through the decades—60s through the 90s—sourced from across Europe as well as from the nearby and famed Round Top Antiques Market. Stitched leather, rustic woods, blackened metals and chunky woven fabrics connect to the Texas aesthetic and are brought to life through the hands of artisans who have meticulously crafted each piece in the lounge. An engaging collection of art, books and a custom upright self-playing illuminated Edelweiss piano further complement the space and provide endless entertainment.
