HB Exclusive: Mirbeau Inn & Spas celebrates 25 years

After 25 years of offering European-inspired retreats focused on wellness and relaxation, The Mirbeau Companies’ Mirbeau Inn & Spas brand is celebrating its anniversary with a major expansion: a new resort in Beacon, NY, scheduled to open in the winter of 2026. The property will be located on the 64-acre Tioronda estate, once home to Joseph and Eliza Howland, along the Hudson River.

The Beacon site marks the fifth Mirbeau Inn & Spa and is the latest step in the company’s growth as a regional wellness brand. Since opening its first location in Skaneateles, NY, in 2000, Mirbeau has expanded to include resorts in Plymouth, MA, and Rhinebeck, NY, as well as a day spa in Albany, NY. The properties are known for their French chateau-inspired architecture, full-service spas, fine dining and curated retail.

“We are proud of our properties and all the hard work we have put into them,” said founders Gary and Linda Dower in a statement. “We have realized a singular wellness resort experience for not only lodging guests but also locals seeking a rejuvenating escape within their communities.”

The upcoming Beacon location represents what company executives describe as a milestone both in scale and historical significance. “Mirbeau Inn & Spa Beacon is by far our largest and most historically significant property to date,” said Jonathan T. Dal Pos, general counsel, The Mirbeau Companies. “Its legacy is rooted in the Howland family’s cultural contributions to Beacon, including the commission of renowned architects Frederick Clarke Withers and Richard Morris Hunt to design the mansion.”

The expansion is supported by a $77 million investment from EPR Properties, a real estate investment trust (REIT) specializing in “experiential” real estate. An additional $47 million in forward funding is earmarked for future development. The funding package was finalized in 2024 and is being used both to recapitalize existing properties and support growth beyond the Northeast.

Founded by the Dowers in the late 1990s, The Mirbeau Companies began with a vision of offering close-to-home escapes that addressed the stresses of modern life. “New information technologies were creating a more productive, but also much more hectic life,” the couple recalled. “At the same time, the romance of air travel was fading. Modern life… was pushing everyone to be ‘on’ every minute, creating a growing need for a quiet, welcoming getaway.”

Their answer was Mirbeau—a name meaning “peaceful view”—which would combine luxury accommodations with spa amenities in serene, drivable destinations. That approach, they believe, has become even more relevant in recent years.

Now led by the founders’ children—CEO Michael J. Dal Pos,  Jonathan Dal Pos and Director of Spa Operations Catherine Sinclair—Mirbeau has grown into a multi-generational family business.

“What sets us apart is that our guests engage with the full Mirbeau experience,” said Michael Dal Pos. “This results in our exceptionally high total gross revenue per room night from combined lodging, spa and dining operations driven by both tourists and local day spa guests.”

Mirbeau reports strong local participation across its properties, with 75% of food and beverage revenue and 65% of spa revenue coming from nearby residents. The brand also generates significant retail sales through its line of spa products, including eucalyptus-infused shower mists, Mirbeau-branded spa robes and a new line of body oils called “Monet’s Favorite Fragrance.”

“The success of our branded retail products and consistently strong gift card sales underscores just how deeply the Mirbeau brand has become part of our guests’ lifestyle,” added Michael Dal Pos.

With plans to add two or three more properties in the next five years, Mirbeau sees Beacon as a blueprint for future growth. While no other sites have been publicly announced, company officials suggest they are looking at similar regional markets near major metropolitan areas.

“Our properties are designed to feel like true escapes close to home,” said the Dowers. “That’s the core of the Mirbeau experience.”
