Empowering fitness at hotels

MUKILTEO, WA—With so many hotels working to appeal to eco-tourists, one fitness company is allowing them the opportunity to be sustainable.

SportsArt’s Eco-Powr product line generates electricity that powers the machine and any excess generated returns to the grid. “Our treadmill is the world’s only energy-producing treadmill,” said Ruben Mejia, EVP, SportsArt. “Within three seconds of turning it on and walking, you are generating enough electricity to power not only the console, but if you’ve got a phone that is plugged in, it provides enough power for that—and it is also pushing electricity back into the grid.”

Mejia reported that the company is currently undergoing a pilot program with a large hotel group using the equipment. “They have more than 4,900 global properties,” he said. “They are asking their guests to work out on this equipment and in exchange for producing electricity, they are offering a 20% discount at their spa. This pilot program is going to last until April, but in the three weeks since it launched, it has already generated about 2,000 watt hours, which is enough electricity to power a refrigerator for about 10 hours.”
