Cozy Corners

Just in time for Valentine’s Day, these fireplaces are adding romantic and relaxing touches to hospitality spaces:

The Wayfinder Hotel—Newport, RI (Pictured above)
Opened last summer, The Wayfinder Hotel is a boutique hotel developed by Dovetail + Co. founder Phil Hospod, who brought together a group of local chefs, bartenders, artists, designers and entrepreneurs to create a hotel that redefined the ‘typical’ Newport experience. In a destination known for its gilded history and traditional accommodations, The Wayfinder represents Newport’s new “creative class” with a fresh, more relaxed and free-spirited energy. Designed in collaboration with New York-based interior architecture and design firm Reunion Goods & Services, The Wayfinder features a fresh take on coastal style and introduces fun bold pops up color such as the mustard yellow fireplace in the lobby to give the space a youthful energy.

“The purpose behind the lobby design was to encourage guests to stay and linger. Exuding a cozy and residential feel, the neutrals stand back and let the saturated colors pop and remind you that you are in the shared space. The bold mustard fireplace anchors the room and the modern art and the rich texture of the lime-washed lower wall breaks up the space,” said Carrie Dessertine, principal, Reunion Goods & Services.

Inns of Aurora—Aurora, NY
Founded in 1833, the historic village of Aurora, NY is comprised of historic homes, shops and restaurants. With only 54 total guestrooms across five historic inns, guests will delight in cozying up to the warming in-room fireplaces, delicately restored from the 18th century, with a cup of freshly brewed coffee, locally sourced breakfast or local wine delivered in-room by resident innkeepers.

“When restoring the double parlor of Zabriskie House, we discovered a fireplace opening that had been covered over decades ago. The room already had another grand fireplace with the original 1904 mantel. While we wanted the new mantel to speak to the original, we didn’t want them to look exactly the same. We decided to use the original as a reference point for the design of the new mantel, where the original mantel featured convex radial carvings, the new mantel echoes the same shapes with a concave design,” said Monica Pittman, director of design, Inns of Aurora.
