Bottleworks Beckons History

The Bottleworks District has released a new suite of renderings for its Bottleworks Hotel as construction continues on the $300-million, urban, mixed-use development in downtown Indianapolis. The hotel, along with The Garage Food Hall, movie theater and retail and office space, is scheduled to open by the end of the year.

Occupying the top two floors of the historic bottling works administration building, Bottleworks Hotel will offer a glamorous aesthetic that weaves historic architectural features with modern hotel amenities, including meeting space, room service, fitness center and valet parking, along with a restaurant and lounge.

“To work on a historic restoration project is like no other,” said Susan Griffin, VP of interior design at Hendricks Commercial Properties. “To create a unique experience for guests and have them take away a conversation that they will have time and time again with others is a required goal of mine and the team of designers that I work with. We love mixing the past, present and future.”

Updated Bottleworks Hotel renderings showcase the hotel’s reimagined lobby with terrazzo floors, plaster detailing, colorful ceramic tile and brass art deco patterned doors, restored to their historic state. Entry to the 140-key boutique hotel will be located at the southwest corner of the historical building, where the iconic frozen fountain Coca-Cola sign once topped the roof. Originally the building’s “Filler Machine Room,” a rolling conveyor belt leading to the bottling rooms has now been replaced by the hotel’s front desk area.

“We love providing and are known for providing the unexpected,” Griffin said. “We start every design process with a ‘branding,’ session, sometimes more than one, amongst many team members—marketing, hospitality, development—throwing ideas and inspirations onto the table.”

Steps from Bottleworks Hotel, The Garage Food Hall will be home to more than 25 independently owned local and regional vendors, bringing together culinary talent and an eclectic mix of specialty retail inside a 38,000-sq.-ft. communal space. The Food Hall is scheduled to open in early December.

Phase I of Bottleworks District also includes the development of venture studio High Alpha’s new headquarters, and Living Room Theaters, an eight-auditorium cinema with a bar and lounge, offering a sophisticated and comfortable venue to showcase local and internationally acclaimed films.

“I have a personal ‘checklist’ from each project and reviews that we receive, to understand and provide for today’s guest,” Griffin noted. “I work with some extremely talented craftsmen that can incorporate today’s technology into something that appears to be from the past. It’s awesome to have a guest inquire about an item that they saw in the hotel room that they would like for their personal home. Our team does extensive research on everything down to the sleep quality of the mattresses to the softness of the robes. A guest stay should be as pleasant as their own home, if not better.”
