An English Escape

Dorchester Collection’s Michelin-starred country house hotel and spa, Coworth Park, has revealed a new three-bedroom private standalone gatehouse cottage. Offering the ultimate staycation, North Lodge at Coworth Park has a private driveway, three spacious bedrooms, lobby, dining room and kitchen where guests can cook for themselves or have a dedicated chef to cater for them.

The latest addition to Coworth Park’s 22 suites, North Lodge is Coworth Park’s gatehouse located on the outskirts of the grounds, with full access to the rest of the estate. Guests can make use of their own private garden with an outdoor dining area, to enjoy a summer barbeque or al fresco evenings. North Lodge has been carefully restored and designed to capture the hotel’s charm and residential origins while introducing artwork by local artists to create a stylish but cozy English country escape. The interiors echo the changing seasons of Coworth Park, with charming antiques sourced from the local villages and neighboring Windsor.

“The design of North Lodge is very much in keeping with the inspiration for Coworth Park’s Mansion House, Stables and our other secluded private accommodation the Dower House; which are a celebration of the four seasons,” said Zoe Jenkins, general manager at Coworth Park, who led the Coworth Park design team. “When designing North Lodge the emphasis was on warmth and exceptional comfort within a relaxed environment. Interior spaces are calm and intimate, intended to convey the feeling that guests are staying in someone’s own home, not a traditional hotel.”

The design of the 2226 sq. ft. (206.8 sq. m.) North Lodge is in keeping with Dorchester Collection’s vision for Coworth Park to create the finest country house hotel and spa in the U.K., yet avoids the predictable country house clichés. Inspiration was taken from modern-day family-run private English country estate properties. The design approach is one of incredible comfort, simple beauty but attention to detail, creating a relaxed and informal environment that encourages the guest to unwind. Furnishings, furniture and art are British-made, acknowledging a British tradition of craftsmanship with a nod to the hotel’s world-renowned links to equestrian and polo.

The master bedroom is a large airy suite with a super king-sized bed, high ceilings and dual aspect views of the meadow and the private garden. An en-suite bathroom features a signature Coworth Park copper bathtub, double vanity and a large walk-in shower. The Turret room features a king-sized bed, a walk-in dressing area and en-suite bathroom with signature copper bathtub. A further double room, known as the Snug, has views across the wildflower meadow and a family bathroom adjacent to it.

“It was important to combine modern furnishings and comforts while retaining the classical elements of architecture from the origins of the building,” Jenkins said.

The highlight of North Lodge is the open plan kitchen and dining room with space for up to 10 guests to enjoy dining together. The kitchen is fully equipped with appliances from premium brand, Miele. Everything is thought of from a full surface induction hob with Teppan Yaki plate to a steam oven and Sous Vide unit to enable guests, who are keen cooks, to conjure up a delicious feast. Alternatively, guests can take advantage of the dedicated chef who, on request, can prepare the same Coworth Park restaurant-quality food within North Lodge. The chef can also host an impromptu private masterclass for the whole family around the dining table or kitchen island. Other state-of-the-art appliances include a Miele fridge freezer with ice maker, a wine conditioner and a built-in coffee machine to allow guests to treat themselves to a choice of delectable beverages and barista-quality coffee at the touch of a button.

The French doors open out from the kitchen dining room onto the private garden, featuring a deck for al fresco dining on sunny days. There is also a tranquil sitting room with an original open wood-burning stove, the ideal place in which to while away wintry afternoons.

North Lodge is the nearest accommodation to The Spa at Coworth Park, providing three leading product ranges in a contemporary eco-luxury setting, decorated with natural and organic materials, flooded throughout with natural daylight and offering parkland views. Guests may enjoy a celebrated range of spa products including Aromatherapy Associates, Carol Joy London and ishga. The spa features eight treatment rooms including two doubles, a manicure and pedicure suite, relaxation room, The Spatisserie, gym, indoor pool and outdoor sun terrace where guests can recline on sun loungers.

Coworth Park’s Mansion House is just a short walk for guests to enjoy Michelin-starred Restaurant Coworth Park under the culinary guidance of executive chef Adam Smith, as well as seasonal cocktails in The Bar, and the Drawing Room where award-winning afternoon tea is served. Alternatively, guests can choose to dine on rustic fare in The Barn. There are also buggies on hand to make the journey around the grounds even easier.

“We have seen an increase in guests looking to book a more private experience and North Lodge provides just that,” Jenkins said. “Available for up to six guests, North Lodge is perfect for families to come and enjoy the Coworth Park grounds with fun country pursuits and make the most of our Kids Club just a short walk from the lodge.”

North Lodge is the second private standalone cottage at Coworth Park, joining the grade 2 listed Dower House first built in 1775. The Dower House has a private driveway, galleried entrance hall, three en-suite bedrooms, snug/study, living room, dining room and kitchen where guests can cook for themselves or have a dedicated chef cater on request.
