Hotel Projects Underway in the North and South

NATIONAL REPORT—From New York City to Florida and Georgia, hotel projects are in the works. Whimsical outdoor spaces, historic revivals and retail destinations are some of the newest developments underway:

Renaissance New York Chelsea to Open with Garden-Inspired Decor

Come fall, Renaissance New York Chelsea Hotel will open its doors as one of the tallest properties in Manhattan’s Flower District, rising 430-ft. high. The hotel will have 341 guestrooms and suites with garden-inspired design by Stonehill Taylor. Trellage-Ferrill Studio fabricated custom pieces, like a collection of upside-down bird cages, as well as a large pendant at the elevator lobby inspired by a bird’s nest. The property will also have a nightlife lounge, Somewhere Nowhere, operated by El Grupo SN, a rooftop pool and terrace, restaurant and 7,238 sq. ft. of meeting and event space.

Historic Building Revival Set to Open its Doors in NYC

A new addition to the New York City hotel landscape will debut in early 2020 when NH Collection opens its first North America property with NH Collection New York Madison Avenue, around the corner from the New York Public Library and Bryant Park, with Grand Central close by. The hotel will have 281 guestrooms, seven suites and dining concepts. Taking its inspiration from the ad agencies that once called the neighborhood home, the historic 1920s Renaissance Revival building designed by architects E. Murgatroyd & P. Ogden will undergo a multimillion-dollar renovation.

AC Hotel Coming to Florida Shopping Destination

Simon has commenced construction to bring the AC Hotel by Marriott brand to Sawgrass Mills, an outlet and value retail shopping destination in Sunrise, FL. The 174-room hotel is expected to open in late 2020—a time frame that would coincide with the shopping center’s 30th anniversary. The eight-story hotel is being developed with Norwich Partners. There will be an AC Lounge, a communal creative space with food and beverage options and a fitness center.

Updated Meeting Space, New Hotel to Debut in Suwanee, GA

Sharpe Contractors has broken ground for an upcoming new ballroom at the Atlanta Marriott Northwest at Galleria and an adjacent new four-story, 147-key SpringHill Suites by Marriott. The 61,866-sq.-ft. ballroom, designed by Studio Architects of Atlanta, will complement the existing Atlanta Marriott Northwest at Galleria’s current meeting space and is scheduled for completion in March 2020.

The SpringHill Suites at Galleria is set to complete in August 2020 and is close to the Braves at SunTrust Park and business, dining and entertainment options in the growing Atlanta Galleria area. The SpringHill Suites at Galleria was designed by James L Browning Architects. Rick Wiggins, of Wiggins Program Management, will oversee the project for the owner.The two projects have a combined construction budget of more than $21 million.
