HB Exclusive: Accor to Open First Mondrian Property in Singapore in 2023

Accor has revealed that Singapore’s first Mondrian hotel will be built in the heart of the city’s Duxton Hill neighborhood and is set to open in early 2023. The property is being developed by Craig Road Property Holdings.

“The iconic arrival of Mondrian to Singapore’s Duxton Hill neighborhood is part of our global expansion strategy for the Mondrian brand,” Chadi Farhat, COO of sbe, told Hotel Business. “Singapore is a leading travel destination, making it the perfect community for our Mondrian guest. The hotel’s location in Singapore’s bustling Downtown Core District is at the heart of one of the most exciting cultural scenes in the world.”

He added, “At Mondrian Singapore, there is something for everyone. During the day, you can step outside the hotel and experience the quaint, cobblestone streets. At night, the city comes to life with a vibrant energy that will be matched by the culinary experiences we will bring to the hotel. Mondrian Singapore will be more than a hotel; it will be a destination.”

The luxury lifestyle hotel, comprising 300 guestrooms and suites, a restaurant, a lounge and a rooftop bar, will combine historic architecture from Singapore’s centuries-old shophouses with a new build of modern, contemporary influences.

“We are excited to debut the Mondrian brand in Southeast Asia and Singapore with our partner Accor,” said Sun You Ning, director, Craig Road Property Holdings. “Mondrian Singapore will provide guests an opportunity to stay in the heart of Duxton Hill, a vibrant heritage conservation area surrounded by Michelin-starred eateries, award-winning bars, and iconic retail stores—all within walking distance to the Central Business District.”

A collaboration between DP Architects and Studio Carter, Mondrian Singapore will have a lower three-story building in a contemporary take on the famous Singapore “shophouse” building typology. This portion of the hotel has a terracotta roof and colonial-style window shutters and will include the hotel’s premier guest accommodations in loft suites. The hotel will then be expanded with a new, contemporary tower housing the majority of the hotel’s guestrooms as well as a rooftop pool and bar and signature restaurant. The two buildings will be united by an urban oasis landscape deck to remind guests of their location, as Singapore is known as the “Garden City.” In addition to the rooftop pool, the hotel will also has a speakeasy bar with a hidden entrance for travelers and locals to explore. sbe subsidiary Dakota Development, led by President Joe Faust, will provide design management services for the project.

“Mondrian Singapore is one of nine Mondrian properties slated to open by 2023,” Farhat told Hotel Business. “In addition to the recently opened Mondrian Seoul Itaewon, Mondrian Shoreditch London is on track to open in 2021; Mondrian Gold Coast, Mondrian Cannes and Mondrian Bordeaux set to open in 2022; and three more properties will be announced soon.”

He said that when the company considers new locations and partners for Mondrian, it focuses on the “most exciting and invigorating cultural scenes. We want both our guests as well as locals to know that when they cross the threshold of a Mondrian, they will be fully immersed in that city’s culture coupled with exciting culinary and mixology experiences.”

He continued, “Mondrian continues to establish itself as one of the strongest brands in our portfolio, showing staying power for the long-term. This news comes on the heels of Accor’s recent announcement regarding its planned venture with Ennismore, which will see the creation of one of the world’s largest and fastest growing lifestyle and entertainment operators set to include Mondrian. Accor’s introduction of the Mondrian brand to Singapore follows the hospitality company’s global expansion of its luxury and premium lifestyle portfolio as part of a recent acquisition of sbe’s hotel brands.”
