CitizenM Expands East Coast Portfolio With DC Hotel

WASHINGTON—CitizenM Washington DC Capitol is the fifth U.S. property for the Dutch lifestyle and hotel company. It is also the fourth East Coast location, joining two hotels in New York and one in Boston. Located at the confluence of the city’s Potomac and Anacostia rivers, the property is directly adjacent to the National Mall and several Smithsonian museums.

The 12-floor property has 252 guestrooms, seven SocietyM meeting rooms and a CloudM rooftop bar with an exterior terrace—all designed by concrete Amsterdam and furnished by Vitra, both long-term collaborators of CitizenM. CanteenM, a 24/7 kitchen offers food, snacks and drinks. Everything is sourced fresh from Chef Jess, a local women-owned business.

The hotel facade is wrapped with a huge piece by Erik Parker, a New York-based artist known for his cartoonish compositions inspired by American subculture. Inside, local artist JD Deardourff’s work adorns the living room walls and ceiling with his signature color palette and apocalyptic landscapes. Hipster-styled illustrations of former presidents by artist Amit Shimoni are also present.

In the near future, CitizenM will welcome a second Washington property located in the NoMa district—CitizenM Washington DC NoMa—with 292 keys. By 2025, the brand will have around 40 properties globally (open or in development), more than doubling its current portfolio. CitizenM’s North American rollout includes future hotels in Miami, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Chicago, Boston and Seattle.
